​Persian Gulf Geographic Location

Persian Gulf is an extension of the Indian Ocean (Gulf of Oman) through the Strait of Hormuz.
It located between Iran to the North and the Arabian Peninsula to the South.
Countries that have a coastline on the Persian Gulf are: Iran, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq.

Persian Gulf Islands

The Persian Gulf is home to many small islands. The biggest island in the Persian Gulf is Qeshm island located in the Strait of Hormuz. Other significant islands in the Persian Gulf include Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, Kish, Bahrain, Bubiyan, Tarout, and Dalma.

​Some of the major cities located in the prsian Gulf are: Bandar Abbas, Kish Island, Dubai, Doha, Kuwait City, Abu Dhabi, Manama.

Persian Gulf Name

​​In 550 BC, the Achaemenid Empire established the first ancient empire in modern Iran. During Achaemenid Persian Empire (550 to 330 BC), the name of "Pars Sea" is widely found in the compiled written texts. Consequently, in the Greek sources, the body of water that bordered this province came to be known as the "Persian Gulf".
